September 2012 Meeting

Greetings Fellow Fermenters!

Well… it’s Fall… almost. By now you’ve just picked/ are about to pick your homegrown hops from your backyard trellises (wash your hands afterwards, men), brewed your HOPS for Hunger Charity Batch, and are anxiously awaiting the ever-coveted Munich-hailed Oktoberfest/Marzen styles chilling in your refrigerators. Personally, I’m just ready for a brew day where the ground water can chill my beer to pitching temps, but I digress. This month’s meeting should be a fantastic one. We’ll host it our usual stomping grounds this Friday (21st) at MFP @ 6:30pm. As always, bring your tasting glasses, a few bottles to share (if you’ve got em ~36-48oz. oughta do), and if you think about, a writing utensil. We are going to push forward on ‘constructive feedback.’ More on this at the meeting, but we would like to implement an anonymous ‘comment card’ type operation for those interested, critiquing/praising each round using BJCP tasting notes. No pressure, but some have voiced a desire for honest feedback on their brews, so here it comes.

HOPS for HUNGER: Saturday’s ‘Liquid’ Bread Charity Contest Event

Huge News: After meeting with the Saturday’s Bread Food Shelter last Monday night, Ed Spencer and I presented the vision for our semi-annual Charity Fund-Raiser/ Club Contest Events. They were excited and unanimously voted to partner with us. That said, we have some work to do. The event will be held Saturday November, 10th from 1-4pm. The location… still to be determined. The Saturday’s Bread Organization is responsible for procuring the location, and they have a few options. We hope to solidify the location in the next few days.

Our next step is to put together a planning committee for this event. So, I am asking for several members to join me at MFP this Friday night @ 5:30 (an hour before our club meeting) to serve as that planning committee. Several members from the club have already volunteered to serve as the point-person in several areas of the event. If you are one of the 10 brewers participating in the HOPS for Hunger Event and/or would like to help out in any way you can, please consider joining us @ 5:30pm, an hour before our meeting, at MFP.

Below is a list of logistics (the point-person is in bold).

1. Find 10 Slots/Brewers (check!)
2. Solidify the Charity (check!)
3. Theme/Poster Design (Josh Hammonds)
4. Public Relations (contact newspapers, home sweet oneonta, radio, etc…) (Need Someone)
5. Ticket Sales Management/Accountant (Kathy)
6. Ticket Printing (Wes Nick)
7. Recruit 2-5 (non-participating) ticket collectors; day-of-event-runners; ballot counters(Jim/Tracy Anderson)
8. T-shirt orders (Find an affordable vendor, collect money from club members, and place order) (Trevor Ostrander)
9. Tasting Glass orders (Find an affordable vendor, collect money from club members, and place order) (Russ Scimeca)
10. Tasting/Voting Sheets Printing (I have the template from last spring) (Need Someone)

Event T-Shirt Sales

As with last contest, there will be club-specific T-shirts for sale to club members who would like to purchase one. Trevor Ostrander will be taking orders this month’s meeting and next month’s. Because this can be a sizable purchase for someone’s credit card, he will need the cash upfront before placing the order. So, if you know you will want one (design is coming) please bring $15 to Trevor at this Friday’s meeting.

Beer Education

I have also included a new page on the site called: Beer Education. While there are many books, articles, and blogs out there devoted to brewing, I will be posting sound articles that relate to some of the more common questions/issues that come up during our meetings. For example, many have inquired about the benefits/science of late hopping, so I posted a fairly decent article that details it.

There will be a HOPS for Hunger Page posted soon with the styles/names of the 10 batches. If your recipe/style has changed since you first signed up, just let me know, and I’ll change it.

Until we taste again,

—josh
