October 2019 HOPS Brew Club Meeting Minutes

Meeting was held at the American Legion Post 259 in Oneonta on 10/18/19 at 6:30pm. Members in attendance: 12

We have another New Member John M.; welcome to the Club!

Topics of Discussion:

Todd & Susan have once again graciously offered to host the December meeting (date TBD), and we will be doing our Cutthroat Christmas Gift Exchange. If you wish to participate, bring a beer/homebrewing related gift (wrapped). Try not to spend more than $20.00.

We are looking for beer style suggestions for the months of 2020. Bring your ideas to the next meeting or feel free to contact us before then. The upcoming month’s styles we do have are:

November style is Brett
December is Belgian Dubbel
January is Wheat Wine
February is Cereal Beer (25% of the grain bill must be boxed cereal; Oatmeal and Grapenuts don’t count)

The HOPS for Sight Lions Club event held on September 28th was a great success. It grossed around $3500.00. Thank you to all of the brewers who supported this event by donating your time and beer!

George M. discussed doing an event with the Cooperstown Lions Club on Columbus Day Weekend of 2020 in Cooperstown, possibly in conjunction with Professional breweries. With the Cooptoberfest festival being pulled from the area, this would be a nice way to help raise funds for a great charity. Ommegang is tentatively onboard. Also mentioned was maybe holding one combined Cooperstown & Oneonta Lions Club event if it could be arranged, rather then trying to do two events so close together. Further discussions are needed. Please bring your ideas on this to the next meeting.

This month’s beer style was Dunkle which is traditionally a dark lager, characterized by depth, richness and complexity typical of darker Munich malts. Deeply bready-toasty, often with chocolate-like flavors, but never harsh, roasty, or astringent; a decidedly malt-balanced beer, yet still easily drinkable.

Member offerings and samples:

  1. George M.: Commercial beer, Sloop Brewing, No Pumpkin IPA, 6%.
  2. Commercial example: Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier-Dunkel 5.3%, 14 IBU
  3. Commercial example: Schloss Eggenberg Doppelbock Dunkel; malt liquor 8.5%, hop bitter followed by malty caramel sweetness.
  4. Eric B.: Winter Dunkel's Bock 2017; 6.04%, dark Munich malt, special B.  Taste great, aged well, delicious
  5. John M.: Cider, Aldi’s apple juice, brown sugar, Oslo Yeast. Made right in the Aldi's juice bottles. Good, on the sweeter side, not dry.
  6. Tom C.: Crabtree Red Wedding Ale (2019); 4.99%, 23 IBU, Red Ale, Maris Otter, Crystal 40, 90, 120, roasted Barley, Kent Golding @60 & 15, WLP 004 Irish Ale. Nice dry finish.
  7. John M.: No Lactose Milkshake IPA, 6.6%, pilsner, Munich, wheat, rolled oats, chocolate malts. Summit, cascade hops. Yeast: Omega Yeast 061 Voss Kveik (northernbrewer.com); a traditional Norwegian “kveik” strain from the farmhouse brewery of Sigmund Gjernes. This yeast is capable of fermenting across a broad range of temperatures with little change in the flavor profile (68-98 degrees F). John said he typically uses only 1 tsp. per 5 Gal batch.
  8. Frank & Chris: Braggot, 13.1%, pale malt, wheat, caramel 60, with 8#’s honey, angelica and mug wort replaced the hops in this brew. Held up well, very good.

November meeting will be held at the American Legion on 11/15/19 at 6:30pm. A Chicken & Biscuit dinner will be offered for $11.00. Hope to see you there.
