September 2019 HOPS Brew Club Meeting Minutes


Meeting was hosted by Deborah & Alden Banks. Thank you for the warm welcome. Members brought a dish to pass, and plenty of good eats and treats were enjoyed. 

23 members were in attendance.

We also gained two new members.  Welcome aboard Andrew & Mary

Topic of discussion:  The Lions Club Oktoberfest event is on September 28th, from 2-5 p.m. as of now we have 10 Brewers, some are bringing two beers to offer. Still room for more if you have any stashed brew.   No shirts this year, but feel free to wear your shirt from last years event.  

September beer style was open so here are the members offerings:

  1. Wes A:  His cereal Lager- made with Golden Grahams, not bad
  2. Andrew & Mary: Cream Ale: 4.9%, this was a kit beer. Nice brew, very good
  3. Chris & Frank: Rhubarb Lambic, brewed 7/15/15, bottled 10/15/16, very good, 
  4. Chris & Frank: Cherry Lambic, fresh cherries, not bad, a little medicinal, 
  5. Todd S.: Dolce Grano: Super Mario Cereal beer, sweet with a Belgian yeast spice, 4.9%  like the maltiness
  6. Brian G.: Super Mario beer, 4 lbs of table sugar, rye malt, fruity at the end, not bad
  7. Matt B.: Chili Lime Gose:  Smoked poblano and Hungarian waxed peppers, lime zest and juice, Himalayan pink salt.  Warm, heat, good
  8. Jim G: Quiet Brown: Pilsen, roasted barley, Nottingham yeast, smooth, palatable 
  9. Eric B.: 3% Amber Ale: had a carbonation issue, a little flat
  10. Eric B: 3% Spiced: with paprika ¼ c crushed red pepper flakes, basil.  Very red pepper forward with some heat to follow.
  11. Eric B.: Belgian Wit: Kit, 4.5% Pilsen, flaked wheat, wyeast Belgian, tasty, nice
  12. Andrew & Mary: Belgian Wit, kit: very sour, infected. Not sure what the cause was
  13. Topher: Belgian Saison: Kit: 5.78% Vienna, cara Munich, Saaz hops, Banana/clove flavor,  may have fermented to hot, but good
  14. Matt D.: Lavender Saison/Farmhouse: Pilsen, Biscuit, Caramel 120, and 100 sprigs of fresh lavender...yes, 100. Extremely perfumy, body lotion, hand soap aromas, lavender forward flavor
  15. Chris & Frank: 3% Atitlan Kape Coffee Brown: Maris otter, Crips pale choc. Malt, cold brew coffee.  very good, tastes like coffee
  16. Matt D.: Crane Hill Milk Stout: Centennial & Kent Golding hops, good
  17. Alden B: Dunkle Danger: 6.7% roasty, Black Patent, nice
  18. Brian G.: On Fleek, Stilwater Artisanal Imperial/double Stout, 13% sweet & Boozy
  19. Matt D.: Ian’s Pale Ale: Maris, Flaked Oat, Munich, Nugget & Centennial. Very good, Hoppy, I like it
  20. Mike W.: NEPIA,  Galaxy, Centennial, Ariana hops. Very hoppy, nice.
  21. Matt D:  Dr. Pepper Mead: 10.5% made with 2 gallons Dr. Pepper soda, honey and champagne yeast, sweet and smooth
  22. Matt D: Fresca Mead:  2 gallons Fresca soda. 11.5% also sweet


Styles for remaining months:
  1. Oct: Dunkel
  2. Nov. Brett Beer
  3. Dec. Belgian Double
  4. Jan. Wheat wine
  5. Feb. Cereal Beer

The next meeting will be held October 18th at the American Legion on Chestnut Street in Oneonta. This will most likely be a steak dinner night.

August 2019 HOPS Brew Club Meeting Minutes


Meeting was Hosted by Wes & Tracy at their place. Thank you. They also put on a Low Country Shrimp Boil,  which was delicious.

Topics of discussion:

The Lions Club event is scheduled for Sept. 28th. Style is open, we still need brewers. If you can't make the event, but are able to brew, we can have someone serve your beer for you. This was a fun & successful event last year, we’d like to see it be successful again. 

Cooperstown on Tap on Main Street in Cooperstown between Pioneer and Fair Street. Saturday, October 10th from 5pm to 8pm with VIP beginning at 4 pm. www.cooptoberfest.com.

The fourth annual Hudson River Craft Beer Festival is coming Saturday, September 17th at Riverfront Park in Beacon, New York. • General Admission Ticket ($45*) includes: 4 hours of sampling, souvenir glass, live music entertainment • VIP Ticket ($75*) includes: 5 hours of sampling, souvenir sampling glass, official HRCBF t-shirt, live music entertainment. *Ticket prices increase by $10 at the door. https://americaontap.com/event/hudson-river-craft-beer-festival/

3rd Annual NYS Cask Ale Festival at Woodland Farm Brewery is October 13th, 3-6 p.m.  First 200 Guests receive a commemorative glass.  $45 General Admission ($50 at the door), $10.00 for Designated Drivers.  $55 VIP gets you in an hour early/glass and discounted food and merchandise. 

New Brewery called “Faith America Brewing Co.” will be opening its doors on Sept. 4th, 2019 from 11 am to 7 p.m., 607 Ruff Road, Margaretville, NY   Visit their website for more info at  www.FaithAmerica.com    Kelsey Grammer is the Owner. 

New local brewery in the planning stages:  Sanctuary Farm Brewing, 164 Loucks Road, Milford https://www.sanctuaryfarmbrewingcompany.com/

We have two new members, Mike W. and Tom C.  Welcome to the club! 

August style of the month was a club challenge: 3% ABV, or as close to 3% as you could get. 

Here were the offerings: 

  1. Matt B. : Cream Ale 3.0.  @3.1%  Some pilsner, flaked corn & rice, Hallertau & saaz with a cali ale yeast.  Tasty, corny, good job. 
  2. Wes A.  : One & Done:  Amber Ale Second run with Limes, red pepper flakes, lactic acid, white sugar.  Aroma of cider, not bad, has some heat. 
  3. Frank W & Chris H.. : Atitlan Kape..  Coffee Brown Ale 3% Maris Otter, Crisp Pale Choc. Malt, Saaz at 60 & 20, US 05, ½ Gal of Cold Brew Coffee. Delicious, very good, Breakfast of Champions.  Tastes like black Iced Coffee, Coffee Dominant.  
  4. Commercial 3% beer, Hermit Thrush Party Guy sour ale.  
  5. Wes A. : My Sister Amber’s Ale 5.3%,  I like it.  
  6. Tom C. : Boojahideen pale ale 5.2%, Pils, caramel malts, Horizon @45, Dry Hopped for 5 days in primary Centennial/Cascade, 8 days secondary Eldorado/Citra.  Nice Color, Good Flavor, nice job. 
  7. Chris H. Frank W.:  Werther’s Original Butter ESB, 5.7%, Butterscotch aroma still there, but slightly diminished, bitter 
  8. Commercial beer, Ipswich 1620 Ale, nice
  9. Commercial Beer, Konkey Dong, Quad dry hopped Triple IPA 9%. 
  10. Hidden Springs Porter @4%  
  11. Alden B. : Porter 6%, nice, very good.    Alden reminisced and said that his first brewing experience was in 1995. Way to go Alden.  
  12. Tom C. : Blue Stallion 10.5% Long Time Lurker, bourbon barrel aged. Sweetness, finishes dry, Vanilla


Alden Banks (255 White Hill Road, Oneonta, NY) will Host the September meeting: tentative date Sept.20th, Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.        

Also in September, the Lions Club Event on September 28th, 2019.  If you haven’t yet signed up we still need brewers.
