Meeting was held at Oneonta Legion on June 16, 2017 with 15 members in attendance.
- HOPS Summer Picnic will be a pot luck starting at 1:00 on Saturday, July 22 at Jim and Teresa Gage’s house. The club will be providing the meats to be grilled. More info will be sent out at a later time with a sign-up sheet where people can list the dish that they are bringing (so that we do not end up with all potato salads or something like that).
- The following is a list of some of the beer festivals going on this summer in the upstate New York area, and we can discuss carpooling to an event or two as we have done in years past:
- July 22 Syracuse Empire Brew Fest
- August 5 Belgium Comes to Cooperstown at Brewery Ommegang
- August 18 Rochester’s Flour City Brewers Fest
- September 16 Madison County Hop Fest
- September 23 Sudsy Brews and Fiery Foods in Binghamton
- There were many interesting beers sampled at this meeting, including this month’s beer style of the month, India Pale Ales:
- Commercial example: Founder’s Centennial IPA has a classic piney hops flavor.
- Commercial example: Sierra Nevada Tropical Torpedo has more of the citrus or catty smell from the Citra hops.
- Michael D.’s Ron Mexico – This has a uniquely herbal orange mint neo Mexican aroma and taste. This is a new hop, HBC 438, bought online at morebeer.com with part of the proceeds going to ALS Research.
- Chris H. & Frank’s Modern IPA – Very aggressive hopping including Simcoe, El Dorado, Jester, and Amarillo that combine to give it almost a wintergreen taste. It was discussed if the strong flavors of the HBC 438 hops may have had a lingering effect on this tasting.
- Chris C.’s Hoppy IPC – Hopped four times with both Centennial and Citra that created quite a spicy taste.
- Matt’s Lazy Summer IPA – Combined the Amarillo, Citra, Zythros, and Australian Summer hops for a tasty IPA
- Brian brought his Special K cereal beer from February – It has aged well and was nice and cold.
- Matt’s LaRose Mallo Saison – This complicated saison was made with hibiscus, orange peel, and lactic acid.
- Wes brought his first original recipe brew (round of applause), a Dark Ale that was malty and quite good.
- Pete brought a can of Mayflower Porter from Plymouth, Massachusetts to share.
- Alden brought Anchor Porter, a classic from the West Coast
- Matt also brought his Kiwi Mead aged in an Oak Cask for two months. Wow!
- For those looking to brew the beer style of the month for future meetings, here is the list for the rest of the year:
- July – Weissbier – 10A
- August – British Brown – 13B
- September – Belgian Blonde - 25A
- October – Oktoberfest/Marzen – 6A
