I hope everyone enjoyed some good brews over the Holidays. While I may loathe the long winters up here at times, sippin’ on a few Russian Imperial Stouts and Barley Wines during these months sure makes the time go a bit quicker! If you’re planning ahead according to the seasons, you might be formulating those Czech Pils and Bavarian Helles recipes soon! That said, this month’s meeting is a special one: THE BIG BREW DAY 5.0: Red Ale Edition Tasting Session! That’s right. For those of you who participated in BBD 5.0 with Brewmaster Roger Davidson, your Red Ales should be nice and ready for our patient palettes. We will hold this Meeting’s Tasting this Friday @ 6:30pm @ My Father’s Place (MFP).
BBD 5.0 Tasting
So, if you participated in BBD 5.0 please bring a few bottles of your spoils to the meeting (36-64 oz). There will be 11 different beers to choose from, all with the same malt and hop bill, with only the yeast as the shifting variable. This meeting will be unlike usual meetings in that we will arrange all 11 beers to be tasted in order, commenting on the different flavors the yeast have produced. While this may sound a bit more “boring” than prior meeting tastings, this type of experiment will allow us homebrewers to understand the differences in ester production, flocculation, attenuation, and general flavor profile that 11 different yeast strains can produce. For each tasting, the 11 brewers will state which strain they used for the batch, what techniques they employed (e.g., fermentation temperatures as well as other techniques such as dry hopping where applicable), and their overall impressions of the beer. After the 11 beers have been tasted, we can continue with other beers that members may want to bring to the meeting. Please keep in mind the effects to the palettes and the ABV of 11 beers prior; that said, you may want to reserve your brews for the next meeting.
February Meeting: The Imperial Cereal Brew aka The German Kellogger
As discussed, individuals who are up to the challenge: we will be tasting beers brewed with 10% Boxed Breakfast Cereal. Yep. Cinnamon Toast Crunch Porters and Raisin Bran Quads. Brew whatever you’d like. Whatever style. The only parameters: 10% of the total grain bill weight must be comprised of Grocery Store Boxed Cereal. (Sorry… Quaker Oats will not count). Let Wes or me know at January’s meeting if you plan to bring something.
Spring Friends and Family Tasting Event
We are hoping to have a Spring Event for Friends and Family in April or May. Keep the calendar and your ideas open. One thought is to host a Bangers and SMaSH event with Brats and SMaSH beers. More details at this month’s meeting.
Until Friday,
Cheers!
