October 2016 Meeting Notes

11/18/2016

Meeting held at the American Legion in Oneonta with (16) HOPS Members in attendance.
Many orders of business were discussed including:
  • The club voted on new officer positions to serve for the next two years.  The new officers are:
    • President – Chris Haddock
    • Vice President – Frank Woodcock
    • Treasurer –Chris Cleveland
    • Secretary –Todd Snelson
  • Teach a Friend to Brew Day at Sweet Meadows was a success with five home brews made over the six hours of the event.
  • The next fundraiser is to be for the 6th Ward Scholarship fund in the May timeframe (being sure to avoid the TAP NY on the last weekend in April) with categories of light lager, pilsner, or gose.
  • Aaron at the Craft Brew Center in Hartwick College will host the club on Friday, December 9th at 6:00.  The location is the Johnson Science Center, Room 201.  If you would like to have one of your beers tested for ABV and IBU, please let Wes know so that he can give Aaron a headcount.
  • There were four “Grocery” store beers, made only from ingredients found at the Price Chopper grocery store.  Here are the interesting participants:
    • Frank’s “Undistilled Shine” made from items including cherry juice, black tea, oat flour, Beano, and yeast harvested from a bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (this is a loop hole that may have to be closed for next year’s competition).  The result had many flavors, sweet, and lacking carbonation.
    • Chris H. started with Frank’s Undistilled Shine and dry “hopped” it with habanero, serrano, and ghost peppers to make a fluid that will clear your nasal sinuses.
    • Mike’s Malta Goya was really sweet as it was made with Goya soda and yeast harvested from Two Hearted Ale.
    • And the winner by popular vote was Wes’ Das Uber/Sour Honey Gravy Ale made with hash browns, coffee, grape nuts, orange peel, apple juice, and Hickory bacon salt with Hodgson Mill Bread yeast for a tasty 6.1% ABV brew.
  • There were many, many  interesting beers sampled at this meeting including:
    • Jesse’s “Missing Body” light beer started the tastings
    • A soon to be released Butternuts commercial brew for the band Anthrax that was being marketed as an ESB, but was disappointing.
    • Wes treated for the expensive Empire Two Dragon beer that is to be sold in China, but alas, it was a cheap Chinese knock off of a beer.
    • Todd and Susan’s Apple Pie Ale that was young and just bottled 10 days before had good taste, but was already over carbonated due to adding too much apple butter at bottling.
    • Chris shared cans of the commercial brewed Lux, a rye pale ale from Bissell Brothers in Maine that was quite good.
    • Brian’s Sesame brown allows you to taste sesame when you burp.
    • Jim’s Against the Light was a fine Old Time German Brown ale.
    • Willow Creek had a nice pumpkin with a touch of cardamom, for those who like cardamom.
    • Chris C. made an Imperial Coffee Stout that was really strong in coffee flavor, for those who like coffee.
    • And for desert, a really well done Kiwi Mead from Matt.
  • The next meeting is scheduled for Friday December 16, at 6:30 at Todd and Susan’s at 8 Ravine Parkway in Oneonta.  We will be featuring the Very Beery Christmas gift exchange, so bring a beer related item (about $20 and it does not have to be a new item) to exchange for this festive occasion.
