October 2015 Minutes

10/16/2015

Meeting held at Willow Creek Farm Brewery in Milford
(14) HOPS Members in attendance
Many orders of business were discussed including:
  • Willow Creek Farm Brewery owned by club members Bob and Barb is now an official New York State licensed brewery.  This was the ideal location for a club meeting with excellent beers and over the top food for the meeting including Frog Pond cheese wheel pumpkin bread from Mike and Karen, Buffalo chicken dip by Susan,  all to go along with Barb’s pulled pork sandwiches and some apple muffins from Jim and Theresa.
  • Dues are to be collected next month.  A fee of $1 per person is to be paid by each to make them official members.  The balance needed for insurance will come out of the current HOPS club funds from the previous fund raiser.
  • Remaining surplus of HOPS glasses will also be for sale on a first come first serve basis at the next meeting at $1 for tasting glasses and $2.50 for pint glasses.
  • The HOPS for Harmony charity event will take place Sunday, November 1.  Brewers are to meet at the B-Side at noon as it will be open to the public at 1:00.  The Catskill Choral Society will be in charge of counting the tickets for competition as well as selling more tickets at the door.
  • The Binghamton field trip on October 3 including stops at Water Street Brewery, Fiery Foods and Sudsy Brews beer tasting and Binghamton Brew Works was very successful.  Hope to do this again in the future with even more participants.
  • Red Shed in Cherry Valley is a brewery that opened in the last couple months and should be visited as either a group function, or individually to check it out.
  • Next meeting is to feature a presentation on water chemistry from the lead brewer at Council Rock.
  • There were many interesting beers samples this meeting including:
    • Wild Blackberry Ale by Willow Creek – A fine ale with hand-picked fresh blackberries
    • John Highland Ale – Strong English Pale ale with American hops making it taste like it was made by more than one brewer.
    • Pumpkin Ale by Council Rock – Had 12.5 lbs of fresh pumpkins added to a 50 gallon batch, so the pumpkin ruled
    • Honey Brown Ale – Sweet offering with 4 lbs of honey in the batch
  • The next meeting is to be held on the third Friday of the month on November 20 at a location to be determined.
