Meeting was held at Jim and Teresa Gage’s house in Delhi on 7/21/18 at 1:00pm. Thank you again for hosting the July meeting! Brats, ‘kraut, salt potatoes, poppers, and too many deserts to count!
12 members in attendance.
Discussion topics:
- As a reminder, next month’s beer style is going to be Gose. Also as a reminder, here is a list of the beer styles for the new few months:
- August: Gose.
- September: Bring Anything
- October: Fruit Beer
- November: Braggot.
- December: Imperial Stout.
- The Lion’s club charity event in October was discussed. The style will be Oktoberbest, which will need to be started soon for a proper lagering. Please be on the lookout for the sign-up coming soon in your email.
- Beers (Beer of the Month entries a-c: Kolsch).
- Matt’s Kolsch. Very clean and crisp. Closest to the BJCP Guidelines.
- Chris and Frank’s Kolsch, Jonestown Kool-Aid. Hoppier than Matt’s Kolsch. Originally brewed as a wedding beer: “On to the next life…”
- Wes’ Kolsch (turned Biere de Garde.) Unfortunately, Wes found out that a Belgian yeast does not make a Kolsch. Fortunately, it does make a decent Biere de Garde. Early additions of liquid malt extract in the boil led to a much darker beer than expected.
- Eric’s SMaSHed Mango Habanero (Vienna/Simcoe). SMaSH split from last month with 2 ¼ pounds of mango and one whole Habanero pepper. Mango added some sweetness. Surprisingly, some people got the pepper flavor, some did not, depending on which bottle they poured from.
- Frank brought a bottle of Ommegang’s 20th Anniversary Ale. A Belgian Strong Dark Ale aged in Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels. Who’s going to save a bottle to open on the 30th Anniversary?
- Jim’s Wee Heavy. Very tasty with a pronounced malt backbone.
- Alden brought a Two Roads Worker’s Comp Saison. Some skunky aroma, but the taste was ok.
- Alden brought a Two Roads 2018 Conntucky Lightnin’. Tastes better than last year’s version.
- Matt’s 2017 Strong Belgian Golden Ale. Still highly carbonated.
- The August meeting will be at Wes and Tracy’s house (400 Airport Road, Oneonta, NY) on Saturday 8/25/18 at 1:00pm. Please bring lawn chairs to sit in. The club will be doing a 50/50 raffle as well so bring your cash! The club will be pitching in for some clams. The additional side dishes will be provided so all the members need to bring is the homebrew. They expect a few additional people to be there so we might want to bring a little more than we normally do. This could be a great opportunity to introduce new people to the joy of Homebrewing.
