1/23/2015

January 2015 HOPS Club Meeting held at My Father’s Place in Oneonta on January 23, 2015

(20) HOPS Members in attendance with (15) beers sampled

Many orders of business were discussed including:

·         The next charity event is to be HOPS for Hounds to be held at Council Rock in conjunction with the Cooperstown SPCA (next door to Council Rock).  The date of the event is yet to be set, but do start thinking about your future prize winning entries.

·         The possible participation of HOPS in Snommegang (2/25) is still being investigated.  Todd will call additional Ommegang personnel this week to determine if HOPS can participate, and if so, to what extent.  A separate update will be sent when available.

·         The 25th annual Hudson Valley home brew competition run by the AHA with professional beer tasting judges is to take place on March 14 (entries need to be submitted by March 11)  .  For those interested, more information is available online at http://hvhb.brewcomp.com/

·         Tap NY is to be held at Hunter Mountain on April 25 and 26 and a Joint Tap Force is to be convened and headed by Wes to determine interest, group transportation, cost, and other details.

·         There were (15) beers in the tastings this meeting including the off beer sampling of a bottle of Molotov Cocktail Imperial IPA by Evil Twin Brewing that had a rather strong solvent taste to it.  After some discussion, it was thought that maybe their fermentation temperature was too high or the beer was left on the yeast for way too long.

·         A fan favorite of the home brews sampled was Matt’s Vanilla Coffee Whiskey Stout made with real vanilla beans and wood chips from whiskey barrels.

·         The Inaugural post-Christmas White Elephant gift exchange was very successful as somehow most everyone went home with a better gift than they brought.  Gifts included beer, food, glass ware, books, and even a beer game.

·         Bob Rogers is now licensed by the state of NY as a Farm Brewery.

·         The February meeting will feature five entries in the Cereal Beer unofficial club competition.  Last year’s cereal beers were quirky, had good stories, and were quite good.

·         A presentation by Barb Monroe on Liquor Laws will be a highlight of the February meeting.

·         The February meeting (2/20) will be at Susan and Todd’s house at 8 Ravine Parkway, Oneonta starting about 6:30.

Cheers!
Todd
