Meeting was held at the 6th Ward Athletic Club on April 21, 2017 at 6:30pm with 12 members in attendance.
Topics of discussion included:
- Reviewed the setup for the HOPS for Athletics fund raiser to take place on Saturday. May 6th starting at 2:00. There will be (10) brewers and it was suggested that each bring a table cloth/covering, ice (though there will be some available if needed), and any beer info signage. Some of the brewers are planning to arrive about noon to help setup. Any volunteers to help at the admissions table are appreciated and will be given a free tasting glass from the event (and maybe some samples too).
- There were many interesting beers sampled at this meeting, including the beer of the month, Saison:
- Commercial example: Hennepin from Ommegang – a fine example as always
- Commercial example: Allagash Saison – much more hop forward and low in carbonation
- Matt’s LeRose Mallo – This was a saison with hibiscus and a touch of lactic acid added for sweetness
- Chris & Frank’s Saison – Made with spelt and had a nice dry finish
- Nate’s Belgian Blonde does not disappoint
- Steve’s Hint of Beer – Light and nicely carbonated
- Matt’s K-Pop cereal lager is aging well
- Jesse’s Dunkel has personally replaced Murphy’s as his “go to” beer
- Mike’s Rogen Beer from Council Rock had lots of rye
- Wild Wolf Brewing Company, out of Virginia, Frank brought a sample of their Strawberry Schwarzcake – Once you get past the strong aroma of manure, the beer was better than expected.
- Mike brought Beware of Confined Spaces – A cranberry and Cascade hops infused apple brandy at about 90 proof
- Mike also brought some Schoharie Shine Sorghum to share – If this was aged in oak or bourbon barrels, it would not be as face punching
Hope to see everyone on Saturday. May 6 at 2:00 for the fundraising home brew competition at the 6th Ward Athletic Club in Oneonta on 22 West Broadway.
The May HOPS meeting will be held on Friday, May 19, at 6:30 at My Father’s Place pub back room at 5690 NY Route 7 in Oneonta, located behind the Rainbow Inn.
