Meeting held at the 6th Ward Athletic Club in Oneonta with (15) HOPS Members in attendance.
Many orders of business were discussed including:
  • The following are upcoming club events scheduled over the next few months:
    • If there is enough interest, a group trip to Binghamton Brew Works Bing Brew Irish B’Fest from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 5 can be arranged.  We can meet at a common location and carpool.
    • “Teach a Friend to Brew Day” at Sweet Meadows is scheduled for Saturday, April 2 and will be open to the public. Club members would show up with their own equipment and brewing for the day.  This may include sharing previously made beverages and grilling some food, etc.  Chris is to talk to Steve about possibly supplying the ingredients at cost as the thought is to do an extract, partial mash, and full mash beer making demonstrations.  If you are going to brew for this event, please sign up at the next meeting (March 19).
    • TAP NY is at Hunter Mountain and on Sunday, April 24, there is a signup on the Binghamton Brew Works website to join their bus group with a pickup in Oneonta.
    • HOPS for Heroes will take place on Sunday, May 22 from 1:30 to 4:00 under tents out in front of Council Rock.  We will try to get up to (20) brewers this year with the beers to be either American Pale Ale or American Pilsner within the BJCP guidelines.  Expect to sell (200) tickets up front with (50) more at the event.  Chris is making sample logos and Becky is handling the advertising, tents, music, parking, etc.
  • HOPS (32) ounce howlers are going to be ordered with club funds.  Minimum order is (72) units.  The howlers will be available for purchase by club members as well as at club events.
  • The cereal beers tasted included:
    • Jim’s “Okay Honey” ale made with pecan and cinnamon Special K cereal.  This was the consensus favorite.
    • The Cinnamon Toast Apple Jack farmhouse ale by Jim F. was also well liked as it was a really good beer even with the cereal.
    • The Puff Golden raspberry ale by Matt had the best aroma and an overly berry after taste from possibly too much berry flavor.
    • Boo Berry Berliner by Chris and Frank, this made you feel like telling the German people in your speech that you are a blue berry, had excellent color from the Boo Berry and 9 lbs. of real blueberries
  • There were many other interesting beers samples this meeting including:
    • A Dortmunder with a slight taste of root beer by Todd and Susan
    • Bob’s Dandelion Blonde as well as Random Red were well received
    • Sam’s Licorice Farmhouse ale featuring lots of fennel and star anise.
    • Matt’s Russian Imperial stout with a little more aging was nice
    • Chris C.’s Baltic Porter that has aged 1 year was quite high in malt and sweetness
    • The hoppiest of the evening was John’s Welcome Back double IPA
    • Mike’s Problematic Rye with toasted caramel taste was interesting
    • Frank’s Sickly Sweet Pear Jack was an after dinner liquor coming in at a double frozen concentrated 22.2 ABV capping the evening off in style.

  • The next meeting is to be held on the Saturday March 19, starting at noon at Todd and Susan’s house at 8 Ravine Parkway and will include a lunch/grilling.  The brew club will be supplying the meat to grill with matching buns from club funds.  Please bring a dish (salad or appetizer or dessert) to share.  Plan to taste many of the Big Brew Day beers during this meeting too.
