April Meeting

4/22/2016

Meeting held at the Oneonta Theater with (16) HOPS Members in attendance.
Many orders of business were discussed including:
  • The “Teach a Friend to Brew Day” at Sweet Meadows held on Saturday, April 2 was a success with many interested people asking questions and sampling some home brews and grilled food, in spite of the rain/hail/snow at various points during the day.  For future days similar to these, it is suggested that we brew indoors in the green house at Sweet Meadows during one of the winter months when it would not interfere with selling of plants.
  • HOPS for Heroes will take place on Sunday, May 22 from 1:30 to 4:00 under tents out in front of Council Rock.  We have ten brewers signed up for the event.   The styles of beer for the competition part of the event are American Pilsner or American Pale Ale.
  • HOPS (32) ounce howlers are available for purchase by club members at the meetings, as well as any club events, for $10 each.
  • A suggested website and app for beer brewing are “Wort” and “Tasty Brew”.
  • A viewing of the movie “Lord of the Gourd” was also recommended by some of the members.
  • There were many  interesting beers sampled this meeting including:
    • Jim’s Eye Opener Ale infused with grapefruit peel soaked in vodka (one pound of fruit for one liter of vodka)
    • Mike’s Turbid Cascading Clusterfug with was a cloudy IPA – “It is pretty fuggin’ good!”
    • Barb & Bob’s Saison with Styrian Golding hops, coriander, and orange peel
    • Ken’s first beer, a Super IPA at 90 IBUs was a nice hoppy ale
    • Wes brought some of the new and improved Butternuts Cherry Wheat 2.0 that was actually quite good
    • Sampled Stone’s 4/20 IPA, but it was not as good as Ken’s, and it was decided a beer should not be able to tell the drinker when it should be consumed.
    • A fine dessert to cap off the evening was Frank’s Waxed Greenie’s Apple Gewurstraminer.
  • The next meeting is scheduled for May 20 at 6:30 p.m., tentatively at My Father’s Place restaurant in Emmons.
